THE VA FILES

VA Disability Back-Pay & Monthly Comp ESTIMATOR

This tool estimates the monthly payment for a rating you select and multiplies it by the months you enter. It does not predict your rating, your effective date, or the amount VA will actually pay you — back pay depends on facts this tool cannot know, including your VA-determined effective date and the rate table in effect for each month.

1 Select your combined disability rating

Choose the combined rating you want to estimate a payment for — for example, a rating VA has already assigned you, or a scenario you're researching.

2 Select your dependent status

VA pays higher rates at 30% and above when you have qualifying dependents. At 10%–20%, dependents do not change the rate. This tool covers the most common combinations — VA also publishes add-ons for school-age children, second dependent parents, and spouse Aid and Attendance.

Formula used: each month priced with the VA table in effect for that month, then summed — not a flat monthly × months. Based on VA's official published tables — 2024 (effective Dec 1, 2023), 2025 (effective Dec 1, 2024), and 2026 (effective Dec 1, 2025) — transcribed from VA.gov on 2026-10-05. The per-month breakdown above shows exactly which table priced which months. Your dependent status and rating are assumed constant across the whole period; VA adjusts both in real awards.

ESTIMATE — not a VA determination. This is an educational illustration of what a given rating pays at VA's published rates for each month. It is not a prediction of your rating, your effective date, or the amount VA will award you. Only VA determines your effective date, your combined rating, and your final award — nothing on this page changes that.
